Drive to 5,000

The Spreckels Organ Society’s Drive to 5,000 campaign seeks to restore to the Spreckels Organ the designation of WORLD’S LARGEST OUTDOOR PIPE ORGAN.

The Spreckels Organ is the second largest OUTDOOR pipe organ in the world. The Heroes’ organ in Austria’s Kufstein Fortress, built in 1931, is now the world’s largest. The pipe count breakdown is as follows:

CAMPAIGN GOAL: CENTENNIAL TUBA PIPE RANK

The campaign initially seeks sponsors for the first 61 pipes that will comprise the rank of Centennial Tuba. This new rank will provide, in the words of curator Lyle Blackinton, a “bold, broad cap to the total organ ensemble.”

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY

During 2013, pipe sponsors will be sought. Select a pipe from the posted board that is not already sponsored, then fill out a pledge card and give it to a Board Trustee. Payment can be made right away, or we can accept it at a later date. Either way, a sponsorship card must be filled out to reserve a pipe. If payment is not received after 30 days, the pipe returns to “non-sponsored” status.

At the completion of the campaign, a commemoration (TBD) will be created with the names of those who have sponsored a pipe. It will be placed on a wall inside the Pavilion.

The Spreckels Organ Society is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that depends in large part on memberships and donations. When John D. Spreckels donated the organ and pavilion to the people of San Diego in 1914, he put a condition on it that concerts would forever be free. In so doing, he was issuing a challenge to each generation to support the grand project of the Spreckels Organ for its enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to follow. Mr. Spreckels' challenge has been met in the nine plus decades to date, and the present generation is asked to do its part.

The budget of the Spreckels Organ Society is used for -

  • Maintenance and enhancements of the organ
  • 52 Sunday concerts
  • Enrichment and educational concerts for fifth-graders
  • The Summer Organ Festival
  • Organ student scholarships
