DEATH OF ORGANIST DAVID SANGER CAUSES A CHANGE IN THE LINE UP OF
THE SPRECKELS SUMMER INTERNATIONAL ORGAN FESTIVAL IN BALBOA PARK

SAN DIEGO, CA – Saddened by the death of English organist David Sanger, the Spreckels Organ Society announces a change in schedule for the Summer International Organ Festival in Balboa Park.  Ty Woodward will replace Sanger in concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

 Woodward’s July 12 concert will be the fourth of eleven concerts in the Summer International Organ Festival season which begins on Monday, June 21 with Robert Plimpton in Concert.  All 2010 Spreckels Organ Society Summer International Organ Festival concerts start at 7:30 p.m.  Admission and parking are free, music-loving children and pets are welcome and many concertgoers enjoy picnics in Balboa Park before the concerts.  Light snack, beverages and gifts are available at the pavilion grounds with proceeds benefiting the non-profit Spreckels Organ Society.

 Ty Woodward is currently Staff Organist at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, playing the 4 manual, 37 rank Wurlitzer originally installed in the Fox Theatre in San Francisco.  He has played both classical and theatre organ concerts throughout the U.S.  Performances have ranged from Westminster Abbey, London; Trinity Church, New York; The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.; St. James Cathedral, Toronto and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles to Shea’s Theatre, Buffalo; the Byrd Theatre, Richmond; the Paramount Theatre, Cedar Rapids; the Alabama Theatre, Birmingham and the outdoor pipe organ in Balboa Park, San Diego. He has played several major works with orchestra including the Symphonie Concertante of Joseph Jongen and Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3.  His recording credits include a solo classical recording on the Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and a theatre organ recording on the Wurlitzer organ at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, N.Y. along with accompaniments for numerous choral recordings.  Ty holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California.  He is a former Dean of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and has served on the Commission of Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.  As a pipe organ consultant, he has worked with numerous churches in the design and installation of their new pipe organs, and is the area representative for the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.

  Appearing this summer at the 2010 Summer International Organ Festival are Robert Plimpton on June 21, Canadian pipe organist Isabelle Deamers on June 28,, award-winning American theatre organist Walt Strony on July 5, Ty Woodward on July 12, San Diego native Chelsea Chen on July 19, Kalevi Kiviniemi from Finland on July 26, Organist of the Year R. Jelani Eddington on August 2, James David Christie of the Boston Symphony Orchestra on August 9, rising stars Keenan Boswell and Nicole Cochran on August 16, Dennis James and his popular Silent Movie Night on August 23 and Jazz Night with San Diego Civic Organist Carol Williams and special guests Dave Scott and friends on August 30.

 The Spreckels Organ and Pavilion were a gift from John D. and Adolf Spreckels, of the Spreckels sugar family, and were dedicated and first played on New Year’s Eve, 1914.  The Spreckels Organ is America’s largest outdoor organ and is sponsored by the City of San Diego, The Department of Parks and Recreation and the non-profit Spreckels Organ Society.
